News:: Kero Blaster and Momodora 4 hopping and popping on PS4

Cave Story has influenced countless developers since it was first released twelve years ago, but few have been as prolific as Rdein. His Momodora series are some of the best post-Cave Story action platformers on the market, though the fourth entry in the series stands head and shoulders above the rest. That's probably why Playism, the ever-growing East-meets-West game publishing outlet, has chosen to publish Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight on PS4.

They're also partnering with Cave Story creator Daisuke 'Pixel' Amaya on bringing Kero Blaster, his latest 2D shooter/platformer, to the popular video game console. I've played through Cave Story about once a year since 2010, but I think about playing through Kero Blaster again about once a month. While it's a smaller game than Cave Story, its ample New Game+ content and intense difficulty regularly tempt me to jump back in for a quick burst of fun.

Sadly, I'm constantly tempted to do actual work every time I sit down at a computer (sorry Owlboy!), so having the option to play the game again on a "fun only" machine like the PS4 will do a lot to help me focus on golden frog janitorial duties.

News:: Review: The Last Guardian

How do you really prepare for a review for The Last Guardian? You can't.

I mean, you can try. I replayed ICO and Shadow of the Colossus once Guardian had a firm, really real release date, to try to have a fresh frame of reference, but going into a game from Fumito Ueda, you really need to be ready for anything.

News:: Oculus' Touch controllers are well worth the wait

The Oculus Rift proved that high-end VR has a place in your home, but so far it's lacked one major feature: motion controls. That's something both the HTC Vive and Sony PlayStation VR offered from the start, and it's gone a long way toward helping those platforms deliver more immersive virtual-reality experiences. Now with the long-awaited $199 Touch Controllers, Rift users can finally join in on the fun. Sure, it's taken nine months for Oculus to actually put motion controls in the hands of consumers, but it's clear that the company hasn't been twiddling its thumbs. Instead, it's delivered one of the most refined game controllers I've ever held.

News:: Welp, this Cup Noodle XV trailer is now a thing that exists

Back in September, we covered Square Enix's collaboration with Nissin in order to add its Cup Noodle product range into the long-anticipated Final Fantasy XV. Not only was Square Enix to feature Cup Noodles as a consumable item in its then-upcoming role-playing game, but the development studio behind the latest instalment in the Final Fantasy series was also hard at work creating a quest that would send Prince Noctis and his friends on a perilous journey to search for the ultimate flavour of instant ramen.

No, really.

It turns out that these in-game adverts for Cup Noodle didn't make up the entirety of Square Enix and Nissin's partnership. The two companies have managed to save the most ridiculous and terrible -- yet somehow still wonderful -- piece of cross-promotion for an utterly bizarre mashup commercial featuring both products. Behold, Cup Noodle XV:

News:: The 'Death Stranding' trailer music is headed to vinyl

Hideo Kojima has the video game industry in a frenzy. The Metal Gear creator released a new teaser for his latest project, Death Stranding, to rapturous applause on Friday night at The Game Awards. It's deliciously weird, featuring one-time Silent Hills collaborator Guillermo del Toro, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and a vanishing baby. The trailer, like its spooky predecessor, features the music of Low Roar, which specialist record producer Mondo is now planning to release on vinyl. You'll get two tracks, I'll Keep Coming and Easy Way Out, on the 12-inch "clear with heavy black splatter" single.

News:: Review: Dead Rising 4

I actually enjoyed our break from Frank West.

Heading into uncharted territory with Chuck and Nick in the sequels was refreshing, and for a while, I thought that Capcom was going to create this giant shared universe with new faces over the course of my lifetime. But we all know nostalgia is a powerful drug (especially for a remake-happy publisher), and it's bringing back the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Marvel 3 star once again, on top of the original setting of Willamette, Colorado.

I mean, Dead Rising 3 sold 2.1 million units to date, so it didn't do half bad for something that was never released on PS4, but I get it.

News:: 'Furi' brings its relentless fighting to the Xbox One

You no longer have to be picky about where and how you play Furi, The Game Bakers' distinctive (not to mention incredibly challenging) boss battler. The studio has released its indie darling on the Xbox One with both an extra boss fight and "polished" content, giving you a reward for your patience over the months between now and the PC/PS4 versions. If you haven't played it before and you're up for the difficulty, you should be in for a treat.

News:: Survival smash 'The Flame in the Flood' comes to PS4 in January

The Flame in the Flood's distinctive approach to wilderness survival gaming was well-received when it reached PCs and the Xbox One earlier this year, so it's only natural that the game come to PlayStation gamers, right? Right. The Molasses Flood and Curve Digital have revealed that the game will reach the PS4 sometime in January. The dystopic title will arrive with a director's commentary offering a peek into the creative process, a "host of gameplay enhancements" and PS4-specific perks like avatars and a dynamic theme. More info about the updated mechanics should come soon.

News:: Extended Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite trailer adds Captain America and Morrigan

I've been pouring through the first minute of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite footage just revealed yesterday, and now we have just a few more important seconds. Along with adding Morrigan and Captain America into the frenzy, this extended trailer clarifies a bit more of the gameplay. It looks like the new assist system is more of a combo-based switch rather than a character briefly attacking.

Also, I'm not sure I'm gonna like Morrigan. She was already kind of a nightmare in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Adding the potential craziness of the Infinity Stones on top? Bonkers. At least Captain America looks tried and true (with a Marvel Cinematic Universe suit, however), and Capcom is making the most out of X.

News:: If I had Bloxels as a kid, I'd have grown up to be a game developer

Long ago, back when I was just a timid and naive elementary school student, my best friend and I used to pass the time in class designing levels. We both loved video games growing up. He introduced me to Final Fantasy and a few years before it was announced, we both came up with the idea for a fighting game consisting of nothing but Nintendo characters. I expect a check in the mail next week, Miyamoto.

These levels we designed weren’t for any game in particular. In fact, they would be nearly impossible to beat. They looked something like this:

News:: Hot and Steamy: Black Panther gets turnt up while a toaster calls an elderly tree lady a bitch

Happy Chrimbus everyone! What do you hope to get in your Chrimbus bush from Winter Man? All I know is that you better keep it trimmed and wet! Personally, I hope to get some hot new indie games on Steam like the ones listed below that are releasing this week.

While these look good at first glance (and very well may be), remember that mihgt only be because of the diarrhea problem that Steam has, thanks to all the shit games it allows on the service.

News:: Review: Rad Rodgers: World One

As I mentioned in my preview piece, Rad Rodgers: World One came out of nowhere. I was struck by the mind-blowing graphics and how 3D Realms was publishing a game from a relatively unknown developer. It looked like a throwback to Commander Keen with the visual polish of a recent “next-gen” title. Color me impressed.

After having played through various early-access builds and the release code, I can’t say I’m as enthusiastic as I once was. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot to like with Rad Rodgers, but there is also not much in terms of longevity or originality.

News:: Pros and cons: Our quick verdict on the NES Classic Edition

The NES Classic is an easy sell: It's a $60 device that looks and feels like the original Nintendo Entertainment System, with a library of 30 popular games pre-loaded. It's also easy to set up -- all you need is a spare USB port on your TV. The problem? The device is such a great proposition that it's either sold out everywhere, or only available through resellers for five times the price. We're not sure we recommend spending $300 on this, especially given a few flaws like the too-short controller cables and the fact that you can't download any additional games. But if you do resort to desperate measures to get one this holiday season, we won't judge.

News:: Ys Origin is coming to PS4 and Vita early next year

The Ys franchise is one that I’ve been meaning to really dive into ever since I played Memories of Celceta for the PlayStation Vita. Its fast-paced and action-oriented gameplay, as well as its kick-ass soundtrack, had me unable to put my Vita down until I'd downed its final boss.

Despite my adoration for Memories of Celceta, I've unfortunately not gotten around to playing some of the other instalments in Nihon Falcom's long-running JRPG franchise for one reason or another.

It looks like I'll soon have a good excuse to jump back into the series, as DotEmu has announced that it will be releasing Ys Origin for the PlayStation 4 and Vita on February 21 next year. Ys Origin -- which is meant to be a prequel to the rest of the series, taking place 700 years prior to Ys 1: Ancient Ys Vanished -- first launched in Japan back in 2006, although it took another six years to make it to the West via a PC release on Steam and GOG.

DotEmu has also advertised that the PS4 and Vita version of Ys Origin will contain various additional features. Save for a handful of new language options (French, Italian, German and Spanish) to go alongside the English and Japanese translations, the publisher hasn’t specified what exactly this entails, however.

There’s also no word on the pricing of this release. Hopefully it isn’t too expensive, as it only costed $20 when the PC version was released back in 2012.

News:: MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries announced

After more than 15 years, MechWarrior is heading back to what the franchise was built on - a dedicated single player campaign. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, a new stand alone title separate from Piranha Games free-to-play multiplayer title, MechWarrior Online, will be based around a story-driven single player narrative driven by player choice.

Piranha Games broke the news in front of a live audience at Mech_Con, a convention celebrating all things BattleTech and MechWarrior. Judging from the reaction of the crowd (and my blown eardrums), at least the hardcore robot fanbase is pleased with the news. Details are scarce (of course), but a live pre-alpha gameplay demo looks promising. It's got ancient mechs, building destruction, and firey explosions - which happen to be my top three criteria when judging robot games.
