News::Nintendo's 'Miitomo' reportedly has over 4 million users

Nintendo's first smartphone app, Miitomo, launched with a lot of fanfare. But how many people are actually interested in it? Quite a few, if you ask SurveyMonkey. It estimates that Miitomo has racked up 4 million people who use it at least once a month, and 1 million who use it every day. Supposedly, that translates to about $280,000 in in-app purchases every week. That's not a huge amount of cash in the context of Nintendo's console games, but pretty healthy for a brand new (and relatively niche) social network.

News::Arizona State University wins 2016's 'Heroes of the Dorm'

Arizona State University's "Real Dream Team" won't have to pay for tuition for the rest of the time they're enrolled. How's that? Over the weekend these runners up from last year's premiere Heroes of the Dorm competition beat out rivals from UConn and the University of Texas at Arlington in Heroes of the Storm, where top prize is gratis education. Before you start wondering if they can repeat this, maybe give the guys a break and let 'em bask in the victory of not only free college, but of their eSports exploits being broadcast in primetime on ESPN 2.

News::'Don't Starve: Shipwrecked' lands on your PS4 this spring

If you're thoroughly hooked on Don't Starve but don't want to retreat to your PC to play Shipwrecked, we have good news. Klei and Capybara have announced that Shipwrecked will be available on the PlayStation 4 sometime this spring. There's no mention of any big changes for this console release (we wouldn't expect any), but that's fine -- the real emphasis here is on adapting Don't Starve's quirky survival gameplay to a world full of tropical islands and horrible sea monsters. And if you need to get your fix on the road, be patient. Klei's Corey Rollins says his studio is "looking in to" the possibility of a PlayStation Vita port for Shipwrecked, so you might have a portable option in the future.

News::Open-world survival game 'Rust' adds female character models

Rust, the popular open-world survival game from the creator of Garry's Mod, now features female character models after more than two years on Steam Early Access and attracting millions of players. Facepunch Studios rolled out the new models in an update late last week. Players don't get to choose what their characters look like or which gender they are -- models are randomly assigned and locked to individual Steam IDs.

News::Step back in time with a mysterious, unreleased Neo Geo game

The Neo Geo served as a launchpad for a handful of influential fighting game franchises like The King of Fighters, but there may be one more masterpiece buried in the 26-year-old hardware. About a year ago, Neo Geo fan Brian Hargrove bought an unlabeled ROM board at a Japanese auction for about $600 in the hopes that it would contain leftover data he could play with, USgamer reports. After a few failed attempts to extract its secrets, he got it working and stumbled across an unknown, unfinished fighting game prototype that might tie into Dungeons & Dragons lore. Happily, he's shared videos and images of the mystery title in action.

News::'Punch-Out' reveals a surprise nearly 30 years later

More than a few games have extremely obscure Easter eggs that might take months or years to uncover, but this one might just set a record. Reddit user Midwesternhousewives has discovered an egg in Punch-Out (aka Mike Tyson's Punch-Out) that tells you when to deliver a knockout blow to two fighters. See that bearded man in the front row of the crowd, to the left? If you're in your second fight with either Piston Honda or Bald Bull, he'll duck at the exact moment you need to punch -- you only have to watch him to guarantee victory. Believe it or not, no one caught this secret in the 29 years since the boxing game reached the NES.

News::'Titanfall 2' is coming to PlayStation 4, watch the trailer

PlayStation Europe dropped the first teaser trailer for Titanfall 2 on Twitter Monday. Titanfall 1 was the Xbox One's marquee exclusive when it launched shortly after console's debut back in 2013, which makes the sequel landing on its rival platform all the more intriguing. And given Microsoft's recent agreement with Sony to allow cross-platform multiplayer, this could portend some very cool online matches that exceed the original's 6v6 player limit. There's no word on when Titanfall 2 will actually be released, however PS Europe says the game's gameplay trailer will be go live on June 12th.

News::Codemasters snaps up 'Driveclub' developer Evolution Studios

It was a sad day when Sony decided to drop Evolution Studios from its pantheon of first-party video game developers. Following the announcement, it was unclear what would become of the company best known for creating Driveclub and the MotorStorm franchise. Well, now we have an answer. Codemasters, another racing specialist in the UK, will be picking up the company on April 25th. It'll create something of an independent super-studio, with Mick Hocking, co-founder of Evolution, taking on the role of VP Product Development at Codemasters.

News::The first 'Gears of War 4' trailer is sad (and sounds like it)

We saw Gears of War 4 gameplay footage back at E3 2015, but (in time to hype the game before this year's game show), here's a short trailer that's a bit of a downer. Setting the scene for the son of the main protagonist from all the previous games, 25 years have passed since the last fight, and yet there's still things to gun down with giant machine guns. (And they deserve it for knocking down that tree.) As is the GoW series' wont, we get a cover song to underscore the destructions: Simon and Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence, which will probably sound familiar to most of you.

News::Step inside a mind filled with beauty and fear in 'Figment'

Figment is a colorful, whimsical puzzle game that combines childlike fantasies with mature themes including death, disease and trauma. It shouldn't work. These ideas should be oil and water, existing around each other but never fully melding into a cohesive experience. But Figment defies logic -- even in an early build, the game is magical and deep at the same time. It's like an episode of Adventure Time mixed with the adorable puzzler Machinarium but in a musical, hand-painted world.

News::Senator Al Franken takes on Oculus over VR data mining

With all of the groundbreaking aspects of virtual reality come a slew of new privacy concerns. Oculus, for example, says in its privacy policy it will track information about your location, physical movements, and how you're using the Oculus Rift headset. Most of that is pretty standard hat for any technology product today, though the notion of tracking your movements is something unique to VR. Still, it was only a matter of time until Senator Al Franken, a consumer advocate who has made a point of pushing back against invasive privacy policies like Uber's, weighed in.

News::Nintendo kills 3D 'Zelda' tribute game on the web

About a half million people were amused by a browser-based Zelda tribute, but Nintendo's lawyers weren't among them. As we predicted, the company told the folks behind Zelda30Tribute to take it down on account of copyright infringement. "I guess [the game] was a little too pixel perfect," say developers Scott Lininger and Mike Magee. Overall, the duo feel that building the 2.5D enhanced demo was worth the legal action, though. "We learned a bunch and wrote some code that others might learn from, too," they say.

News::The PS4's new update sneaks in 4TB drive support and more

Yes, yes, you can now play your PS4 on your PC or Mac. (We'll be doing it on our break.) but the latest update also resurrects old features, adds new ones, and does plenty more if you have no remote (!) interest on depending on your internet connection to play PlayStation at work. First up, your newest PlayStation will now support up to 4TB of storage, if you're in it for the long haul -- or really like your own gameplay videos. The update also marks the return of USB music playback, allowing you to easily listen to your own music -- just plug in a stick and select. As Reddit goes to work finding all the new things, we've added more notable tweaks right after the break.

News::Team behind 'Shadow Moses' to focus on 'Metal Gear' VR museum

Shadow Moses was intended to be a Metal Gear Solid fan remake, but development came to a halt last month over copyright issues. As a result, the group behind that project, iRam Gamer, has now shifted focus to creating a virtual reality museum honoring the franchise. Called The Fan Legacy: Metal Gear Solid, its designers are quick to label the VR experience as unofficial and non-profit. Still, given how the situation with Shadow Moses played out, there's a chance Konami won't feel appreciative. If all goes according to plan, though, iRig Gamer hopes to release The Fan Legacy: Metal Gear Solid in May.

News::'Quantum Break' is a legitimate reason to buy an Xbox One

Almost three years after the Xbox One's debut, it's getting its biggest and arguably first real exclusive. Quantum Break won't be available on other consoles, it isn't a sequel, nor is it multiplayer-only. It's the latest game from Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind the Max Payne and Alan Wake franchises. And it couldn't come at a better time for Microsoft, either: In a matter of weeks PlayStation 4 owners will have Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and Wii U owners get Star Fox Zero. If Xbox One didn't have an exclusive of its own right now, it'd be the odd console out.

Good thing, then, that it's Remedy's best game yet and the Xbox One finally has a AAA showcase for what it's capable of.
